New Extension of the Validity of Visa and Residence Cards Until October 15th, 2025

25 June, 2025

The Portuguese government has once again extended the validity of expired or soon-to-expire visas and residence permits, due to the ongoing backlog at the country’s immigration authority (AIMA).

What’s New?

According to the most recent official communication, all visas and residence cards that expired on or after March 2020 will now remain valid until October 15, 2025. This automatic extension aims to protect the legal status of foreign nationals in Portugal while they await delayed appointments or document renewals.

Important Practical Considerations

While this news may provide some reassurance, it is important to clarify a few essential points:

  • Do not delay your stay requirements

The extension does not exempt clients from the legal obligation to meet minimum stay periods in Portugal. We strongly recommend that all clients prioritize fulfilling these requirements as soon as possible, especially to avoid future issues with renewal or citizenship applications.

  • Extension is not valid for Schengen travel

Although this measure ensures legal residence within Portugal, it does not guarantee freedom of movement across the Schengen Area. If your residence permit or visa appears expired, other Schengen countries may not recognize the extension.

  • Travel must be direct

If you must travel while holding an expired card, ensure that you enter and exit Portugal on a direct flight. Avoid layovers in other Schengen countries, as border authorities may deny entry or re-entry.

We understand these limitations may cause concern or practical inconvenience. The IAS legal team remains available to:

  • Assess your specific situation
  • Assist with your renewal timeline
  • Help you ensure compliance with minimum stay requirements

IAS will continue to monitor the situation and share relevant updates with all clients and partners.

If you have any questions about your current status or future plans, please don’t hesitate to contact your case responsible.
