A Day in the Life of an Immigration Lawyer

31 January, 2025

Welcome to the second edition of our new monthly feature “Walking in a Lawyer’s Shoes”, where we showcase the daily work of the dedicated professionals at International Atlantic Services (IAS).

This month, we present Fernando Almeida Marques, an immigration lawyer who has been part of our team since November 2022.

Morning: Setting the Stage

My day begins early, usually around 6:30 AM. I start with a quick workout, which helps me focus and mentally prepare for the day ahead. Besides preparing me mentally, it also allows me to follow the principle of a sound mind in a sound body, and being physically active is definitely a valuable asset. While having my coffee, I review my agenda and check any urgent emails. By 9:00 AM, I’m ready to start working, whether from the office or home. I typically begin by reviewing client messages and ongoing cases, addressing immediate concerns, and organizing the tasks for the rest of the day.

Midday: Supporting & Planning

Mornings are often dedicated to client meetings. These can include initial consultations, where I explain the legal process and assess the client’s needs, or strategy sessions with long-term clients. A key part of my job is listening. It’s not just about solving problems; it’s about understanding each client’s story and guiding them through one of the most challenging times in their lives. When necessary, I accompany clients to AIMA for their appointments, ensuring they feel supported and that the process goes smoothly. Seeing clients successfully complete these crucial steps is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

The Team is fundamental. Whether sharing updates on cases or discussing solutions together, this time of interaction and team-building strengthens our teamwork and enhances the quality of our service.

Afternoon: Overcoming Challenges and Keeping the Pace

In the afternoon, my work alternates between fieldwork and office tasks. Some days, I might be drafting an administrative action to file in court in defense of our clients’ interests, or submitting important documentation to AIMA. These tasks require great attention to detail and clear communication, as accuracy and timeliness in submissions, are essential to move cases forward. Client needs vary widely, from purchasing properties and taking Portuguese courses for citizenship to seeking guidance on long-term residency. Each situation is unique, making the work dynamic and rewarding.

I always make a point to check in with colleagues on case progress. Sharing knowledge and providing mutual support is vital to our success, and ultimately, it benefits our clients.

In recent days, one of the major challenges the team has faced was the significant changes introduced by AIMA – the Immigration Office – aiming to make all immigration processes faster and address some of the processing issues it has faced over the years. The task of reaching out to thousands of clients as quickly as possible, providing a detailed and specific response to each case, has undoubtedly been the challenge of early 2025 – it feels like we're already halfway through the year, and we’ve barely finished the first month!

End of Day: Planning and Balance

By late afternoon, I shift gears to wrap up the day's tasks. This includes responding to any remaining emails and organizing my priorities for the next day. Outside of work, I try to maintain a healthy balance with family and friends. Whether enjoying a quiet dinner at home or unwinding with a good series, movie, or book, these moments help me recharge and stay centered and balanced.

What’s So Special About Immigration Law?

When I began my career in Immigration Law in 2022, I came from a more impersonal world, dealing with administrative entities – "the State" – and realized I had a genuine passion for working with international clients. Helping individuals and families navigate the complex process of obtaining Portuguese residency and citizenship is extremely rewarding for me. Each success story represents a dream fulfilled, and being part of that journey is a privilege. Having the opportunity to showcase the qualities of Portugal, my country is undoubtedly an added value – internationalizing Portugal is about helping everyone here and introducing it to many who will come.

Thank you for joining me for this glimpse into my daily work at IAS. Next month, we’ll feature another team member and explore their day-to-day.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about how we can assist you, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We’re here to support you.
