PORTUGUESE TAXPAYER NUMBER (NIF) – WHAT IS IT AND WHAT ARE ITS IMPLICATIONS

6 April, 2021

The Portuguese Taxpayer Number (NIF) is an identification number exclusively designed for fiscal and customs’ purposes.

Investors who want to obtain a Portuguese Golden Visa, will always need to apply for NIF. It will be needed right on the beginning of the process, no one will be able to open a bank account without it.

However it is mandatory to obtain the Portuguese NIF, the truth is that the one who obtains it won’t have to automatically pay any taxes. The obligation to contribute only appears at the moment of the transmission of the real estate (IMT and Stamp Duty), or regarding income obtained in Portuguese territory.

It is also important to explain that for married investors it will always be needed to obtain the NIF for the spouse. This obligation is independent from the matrimonial property regime and it is mandatory to obtain even if the spouse will not apply for the Golden Visa.

The spouse’s NIF will be required in the public deed, as it is necessary for identification purposes.

Once again, this obligation does not mean that the spouse will be subjected to any Portuguese taxes.
